Ever the eccentric, Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi went on stage at a video game conference and tried to tell the audience that video games are NOT the most important thing in the world.

We couldn’t believe it either.

Standing barefoot in front of London Nottingham’s GameCity conference, the obviously brain-damaged Takahashi alleged that “it would be impossible for us to be here… if the world was not peaceful.” He tried to convince the crowd that real world suffering and problems were occasionally more pressing than games. “If you’re suffering from poverty and disease, could you worry about collecting coins? I don’t think so,” he argued, unconvincingly.

Takahashi also implied, rather laughably, that things like recycling and being friendly were just as important as beating Halo 3 on Legendary for the third time. “I’m not trying to be the next Al Gore but I’m not sure if we could afford to have video games in ten or twenty year’s time,” the fearmongering designer said, adding that white is black and up is actually down.

After the confusing opening, Takahashi showed off a demo of Nobi Nobi Boy, thankfully distracting the audience from the problems of the real world once again.

Even presidents are human, and as such, they are prone to errors. But Epic president Mike Capps recently revealed that he almost made two mistakes of (sorry) epic proportions when it came to Gears of War. First and most troubling is that he had considered pulling multiplayer from the game because it wasn’t moving quickly enough. (Boy, that would have made that eight-hour single player campaign a much more bitter pill, wouldn’t it?) Also, he said he wanted to scrap the famous ad set to the brilliant Gary Jules‘ equally brilliant “Mad World” because, he says, “I thought it was stupid; I was like ‘What are you thinking? Nobody knows Donnie Darko any more.’” Wow. Just, wow. Watch the above video to see how great things could have been.

The good news in all this is that either Capps’ conscience or employees convinced him in the end to do the right thing. Also, Epic now has an iron-clad recipe for success: Find out what Mike Capps says you should do, and then do the exact opposite.

Slash, Poison, the casts of Reaper, Chuck, and that chick with the awesome power to learn things by watching them on TV from Heroes were just a few of the celebrities who helped launch Guitar Hero III at a Best Buy in Los Angeles this past Saturday night. They also had a really awesome launch party up on the roof, which included different stations where each version of the game were set up, free food and booze (a rock and roll staple), and a concert from Poison, complete with the Burning Man-esque stage from the game.

However, proving that every rose does indeed have its thorn, the upstairs roof-raising party wasn’t open to the general public. So while the masses waited below to buy their copies at midnight, the red carpet and velvet rope brigade partied upstairs on sushi, BBQ, and Red Bull. Just like the real rock and roll world.

Check out video from the event after the jump, along with some sneak peeks from our gallery. So, how many of you picked up a copy on Sunday?

Microsoft isn’t going to be very giving this Halloween, offering us just one title as we stand on its front porch bellowing “trick or treat” in our matching Geometry Wars costumes. This Wednesday, our Xbox Live Arcade treat will be Mutant Storm Empire. Not a bad title, to be sure, but if space shooters aren’t your thing, you’d be better advised to spend your day walking door to door asking for candy from strangers.

A press release for this week’s XBLA offering also includes a list of titles that will be available “in the coming weeks.” The seven listed games include N+, Screwjumper!, Shrek-N-Roll, Spongebob Squarepants, Switchball, Undertow and Word Puzzle.

Mutant Storm Empire will be available 5 a.m. ET for 800 MS points (US $10).

Though science fiction is often optimistic about mankind’s mastery of technology, it rarely doles out the same assurances when it comes to our intelligence or capability to make decisions. For instance, when faced with exploring a monster-infested set of steel corridors floating in space — frequently an exploding barrel research facility where something has gone horribly wrong — the best solution is to stay at home, where there’s safety and oxygen.

But no, it seems all that clichéd sci-fi dreck we’ve watched and played has taught us nothing. If EA’s recently unveiled horror, Dead Space, is anything to go by, it seems our future is still mired in mysterious distress signals (it’s a trap!), poorly lit space stations and snarling tentacle things. See for yourself by watching the trailer embedded after the break. And before you jump to conclusions, note that the protagonist’s head sadly does not fire high-velocity slices of atomic toast (it’s been done).

Those who fired up their new copies of Guitar Hero III yesterday might have been disheartened to find that the game lacked the offline co-op quickplay mode. Luckily (for a portion of you, at least) that’s going to be addressed with a quickness, thanks to a patch that 1UP says is coming this Tuesday to Xbox Live.

The bad news is that there’s no word of similar treatment on the Wii or PS3 versions so far, but hopefully it’s not too far off. We’re not sure what’s so difficult about offline co-op quickplay that it had to be addressed with a patch, but we’re happy that Activision seems concerned enough about it to act on it so quickly. Of course, that’s not much comfort to those without internet or (we’re looking at you new Arcade owners) a hard drive to save the patch on.
