A few days ago we pointed out that the new 2.00 firmware update allows PS3s "see" DivX and Xvid files but not play them, and we thought that this might point to some future codec support. It turns out that we were right as DivX confirms upcoming support for the PS3.

The press release says that DivX technology will be integrated into the PS3, and states that users will be able to "add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date."

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

And, as far as the 2.00 update goes, it seems that PS3 game developers are now able to use DivX decoder technology for their games with the update.

I just want to watch my anime on my PS3 — that’s all I’ve ever wanted. Hit the jump for the full release.
