Surprise! Square’s been busy. Somehow, this does not come as a shock to any of the staff at Destructoid (or any gamer that’s actually awake, for that matter.) If you’re a fan of the highly productive developer, surely there will be something to excite you on this upcoming list.
Titles on the way for the new year include Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors for Wii, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates for DS, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core for PSP and The World Ends With You for DS (this last title was previously known as It’s a Wonderful World.) Somehow the latter’s title has gone from hopeful to foreboding, a decision only Square themselves likely understand the reason behind.
Square has been my favorite developer since I was nine years old. That being said, I miss the excitement that used to come with waiting for a Square release to come out - Final Fantasy especially. You knew that they were pouring all their resources into creating a single game far above and beyond the other entries in the genre. This new strategy of dousing us with games that are spinoffs of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest has made me lose that sense of anticipation, and I regret that.
Emo-ness aside, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see Final Dragon Fantasy Quest 2010: The Legend of Chocobo Mage Wizard Slime in the High Counsel of Phantasia Airship Land in my lifetime.
Hit the jump for the full press release.
