We’ve been impressed by the footage we’ve seen of Capcom’s newest demon slaughtering simulator, Devil May Cry 4. It has all the elements we’ve come to expect from the DMC series: acrobatics, dismemberment, and extreme cases of early-onset leukotrichia. However, after paying attention to the jaw-droppingly beautiful opening cinematic for the game, we are left with one major question: What is Nero listening to on those headphones? Sure, high octane techno-rock is a pretty safe bet, but we guess it’s possible that our crimson clad protagonist can’t juggle baddies unless he listens to ABBA. Guess we’ll find out when the game hits U.S. store shelves in February ‘08.

The week started off really weird and made me realize something about the DOJO (which I’ll tell you at the end of the post). Wario’s different costumes were shown off. He has his classic yellow and purple overalls as well as a few other color variations of his cloths including one that reassembles Mario’s outfit. Tuesday was a double update focused all on Sonic. First, a new arrangement of Angel Island Zone was shown off. The second update was for Sonic’s Final Smash where he turns into Super Sonic. Sonic can fly around the map and tackle opponents for a short period of time.
Wednesday and Thursday’s update were focused on the Trophies in the game. To get trophies based on the Subspace Emissary enemies, you have to weaken the enemies and then you can throw the item called Trophy Stand at them, which will turn them into a trophy. So yes, Brawl has a Pokemon like mode to it now. There will also be a boss battle mode so if you miss your chance during the adventure mode the first time around, you’ll have an easier chance to get the trophies. Thursday showed off the other new way to collecting trophies called Coin Launcher. The slot machine from Melee has been replaced with this. You use the coins you’ve earned in the game to shoot at trophies and stickers that are flying around in the Coin Launcher. It basically looks like a cross between Galaga and Bust-A-Move.
Today’s update was another double update starting with Share mode. You need to make sure to turn this option on once you get the game so that you will be able to receive photos and stages from your friends. The second update of today was for the new item called Dragoon. It comes from the Kirby universe and is an item that is split up into three parts. Once you collect all three parts, your character will hop on it and then target an opponent for a one-hit KO. When you are collecting the item, it gets stored away but can get knocked out of you similar to the Smash Ball.
Now here’s the thing I realized by Wario’s update this week: The DOJO is not going to reveal every bit of info this game contains. I see many people complaining that there’s not enough time before the release of the game for the DOJO to show every detail, but that’s the point. They still want us to be surprised when the game comes out so we’re just going to have to sit back and enjoy whatever bits of info we do get.
With that said, the DOJO updates are taking a weeklong break so we have to wait until Janruray 7th for the updates to start up again. What did you think of this week’s update?

Well, here you are again, about to turn over the last page of the calendar, all too cognizant of the fact that an ugly cardboard backing awaits you. Perhaps it’ll even bear a yellowed price sticker highlighting how much you overpaid for the Official Best of Midway calendar. Really, you ought to know better than buying one that starts at December!
Though there’s still one purely metaphorical and thus environmentally promiscuous page left for 2007 sales in Japan (these are last week’s sales, remember), it’ll be 2008 by the time you get to read about them. Now, we don’t want you walking into the spectacular annual finale without a bit of preparation, so we’ve poured over the entire year’s sales charts to establish and highlight 2007’s most prominent trends. You’ll find a detailed and nuanced report after the break.
- DS Lite: 279,551 57,419 (25.85%) - Wii: 232,907 62,349 (36.56%) - PSP: 171,804 12,806 (6.94%) - PS3: 58,167 5,553 (8.71%) - PS2: 20,391 2,366 (13.13%) - Xbox 360: 7,908 653 (7.63%) - GBA SP: 54 49 (47.57%) - Game Boy Micro: 42 14 (50.00%) - Gamecube: 31 1 (3.13%) - DS Phat: 12 — 0 (0.00%) - GBA: 4 5 (55.56%)

After an erroneous rumor concerning an Xbox 360 motion-sensing controller prototype made the internet rounds yesterday (turns out it was a known Wiimote prototype), the folks at TeamXbox claim to know a little something something and - after said rumor made waves - felt compelled to share with us a little early. They said, “TeamXbox.com can confirm that Microsoft has been researching alternative input technologies for the last two years” including motion-sensing technology ala the Wiimote or Sixaxis.
They also note that Microsoft is specifically looking to improve the right-analog stick (request to MS: fix the D-pad while you’re at it), and TeamXbox will “bring you a real list of next-generation Xbox controller prototypes soon.” We skipped the previous rumor but since TeamXbox is putting their neck out on this one, we’re inclined to give it a little more weight. We’ll know if they’re right soon enough.

Continuing our mission to help everyone acquire The Orange Box regardless of financial means, we deliver the following news. If that last-minute Steam sale just isn’t for you - who knows, maybe you don’t game on a PC, or don’t have a credit card, or don’t have broadband, or don’t have a roof over your head - Valve just let us know that “leading online and retail outlets around the world” will be discounting the gaming superpack this weekend. So if you’ve got gift cards to blow and/or you’re looking for a console version, check out GameUK in the uh, UK or Best Buy in the States.
Maybe you’ve already got the game, but just can’t get the sound of it out of your head. If so, consider the official soundtrack, on sale at Amazon in delicious un-DMRed MP3 format for the new low price of $7.99. if you’re into just the hot new hit single “Still Alive,” snag just that for $0.89. Oh, and speaking of “Still Alive” peep this recent interview with the mad scientist behind the song, Jonathan Coulton. Referring to his understanding of GLaDOS, Coulton says, “It helps that my own personal conflict resolution techniques rely heavily on passive-aggressive behavior.”
Hey, us too! We expect Coulton to contribute some more video game tunes in the future — at least if he wants us to keep writing about him.

We know that there are some of you who have already tired of your holiday toys, and while we think this is incredibly selfish and that you should be ashamed, Microsoft has stepped up, announcing an “updated version” of Metal Slug 3 for Xbox Live Arcade. The game will roll onto the service next Wednesday, January 2, and promises updated HD visuals and two player co-op over Xbox Live, along with all of the ‘rocket lowncher’ antics you can handle. So, for those of you who are just like my mother, and are never satisfied, prepare to fork over a cool 800 MS Points ($10). There, happy now?

You won’t be able to get your hands on a full version of Korean dev Blueside’s Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom until early next year, but a sample of the four-player hack ‘n’ slash has just been thrown up onto Xbox Live for your post-holiday enjoyment.
Judging from the info and clips we’ve seen, the game seems to have the Dynasty Warriors feel as some of the other game in the series, this time with more RPG than RTS influences thrown in. Now, you’re just 1.2 gigglebytes from finding out if that’s a recipe for happiness or disaster. Let us know what you think in the comments.

We’ve got a very special edition of Friday Night Fights planned for y’all. First off, we are heading back to an old favorite among FNFers, Bomberman Live Bombershots Live. In order to cram as much hilarity into tonight’s game playing as possible, things are starting at 8:30 p.m. EST rather than the usual 10:00.
Seeing as how this is the last Friday of 2007, we really want to end things on a high note. If you have not yet had the pleasure of playing games with the incredible people in the Destructoid community, I cannot think of a better time to start than tonight.
Just post your gamertag/Steam ID/PSN name in the comments and scan over the list of hosts after the break. Chances are there will be someone hosting the game(s) you want to play without having your ears bleed from the high-pitched screams and swears of random online gamers everywhere.
[Huge thanks to dvddesign, CaffeinePowered, and all of tonight’s hosts.]

At a German hackers event called 24th Annual Chaos Communication Congress, some crafty/smart/nerdy types have just demonstrated what seems to be a Wii hack with full hardware access.
Through their voodoo, they were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface. This allowed them to run their own code. They hope to use this "in" to provide native Wii homebrew access in the future.
Here is a (non-embeddable) YouTube video directly from the hacker event. If you’re anything like me, you won’t understand anything that anyone is saying in it. The audience applause in the end is pretty impressive, though.
Wait, why are we hacking Wii consoles?

Well, the holidays are nearing an end and it’s time for people to get back into that daily grind once more. Allow us to help you settle in by providing you with the Xbox 360 tidbits you may have missed over the last few days. Of course, you should read them all, but we heartily recommend the first edition of Ask X3F, in which we give advice and counsel that we were actually asked to give. We’ve also got some delectable Ninja Gaiden II footage, the usual Halo 3 shenanigans, and a delightful story about Sony refusing to let Official Xbox Magazine review a Bravia HDTV (even though OXM’s Dan Amrich actually owns one). Last but not least, you’ll want to take a peek behind Microsoft’s silicon curtain and check out the Inside Xbox blooper video embedded above.
