You may remember last week when we told you about the chock-full feature patch that would be hitting Call of Duty 4 sometime in the near future. Well, friends: The future is now. … At least, it is for Xbox 360 owners. We’re assuming PlayStation 3 players will be getting it soon if they haven’t already, we just haven’t had a chance to test yet.
In case you missed the post (for shame!) expect host migration (even when a host drops teams stay together), better accuracy for snipers and ACOG scope users, an expanded Kill Cam that includes claymores, airstrikes and grenades, nine new spawn points on each map, quick mute and some other tweaks. … Well, what are you waiting for? Go play already!

People with any type of condition triggered by shock may want to stop reading now, but research by Frank N. Magid Associates shows that console gaming is the top choice for entertainment among young males. Now breathe, BREATHE! It’s a lot to take in at once. GameDaily posted the charts for the study of 1,864 Americans which shows among males overall console gaming came in third behind using the internets and watching TV. Among males 12-34 console gaming came in first and then drops dramatically in older demos.
The research shows that women overall would rather talk on the phone, watch a DVD, listen to music or read a book before playing a console game; however, there is an odd spike among 18-24 year old females for console gaming. Playing free web-based games did better with females, particularly among women of a mature age. No real shocking revelations, but we’re always appreciative of research that gives some understanding to gamer demographics.

We’d like to think that at least some of you wondered why the X3F Week in Review was absent last week. For those of you that did, we’d like to apologize. We were waist deep in GDC at the time, and the Week in Review was forgotten as a result. In light of this, we’ve wrapped up some of the best of our exclusive GDC content right here. We’ve got an interview with Peter Molyneux (Fable 2) and Fancast interviews with James Silva (Dishwasher: Dead Samurai) and Bill Dugan (Schizoid). We’ve also got a new episode of X3F TV, in which we take a look at the upcoming Sacred 2. On top of all that, we even have some coverage of WonderCon. And if that’s not enough for you, we’re also holding daily Fanswag giveaways all the way through next week. Check X3F every weekday at Noon EST for the latest giveaway.

You may have already heard about this and some of the other items to come out of the Destination PlayStation event, but Konami decided that they still needed to clear the air, and sent out a press release to reaffirm a few things about the Metal Gear Solid 4 release.
For starters, it’s set to arrive stateside (and the rest of the world) on Thursday, June 12th. Other than that, the game will include the highly anticipated Metal Gear Online "starter pack," for 16-player online battles, and an added bonus for those of you who show Konami a little initiative via some preorder love: the Metal Gear Saga 2.0 DVD.
Hardcore and casual fans alike should enjoy the 20th anniversary retrospective that the disk includes, but we all know it’s the secret code for getting in on the Metal Gear Online beta test for this April that everyone’s really after. Still thinking about holding off on that PlayStation 3 purchase? It has to be getting pretty uncomfortable for you, by now.

People often hurl accusations of console bias towards Destructoid. However, I also want to prevent any of you fine folks from thinking that we’re prejudiced towards a specific publisher. Last week, I put up my impressions of the MLB 08: The Show PSN demo. This week, I’m reporting on its competition, 2K Sports’ MLB 2K8. In case you’re confused, here’s the skinny: 2K Games’ exclusivity deal with Major League Baseball only applies to third-party games, so Sony is free to produce their own baseball videogame.
Last Friday, numerous media outlets, including Destructoid, were treated to a conference call with Ben Brinkman, the Executive Producer of MLB 2K8. During the hour-and-fifteen-minute session, he answered a wide variety of questions, ranging from the overarching and general (“What are your biggest challenges?”) to the overly specific (“Will the PA announcer still mispronounce the Red Sox third baseman’s name as ‘You-KILL-iss’?”).
Hit the jump for all the gory details.

Peopel frequently complained about the lack of bundles available a few years back, and it looks like the gaming industry certainly heard their cry. Not only are consoles personalized with color and sometimes even stamped with game art, but bundles have returned with a vengeance. Following the trend are these two recently announced bundles, which will both go on sale during the month of March in Europe.
One is geared directly at movies (which I find a bit odd, but when I think about it I probably watch more movies on my PS3 than I play games on it) and the other at gaming. The movie pack includes a 40B PS3, Casino Royale, 300 and Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray along with a Sixaxis controller. This pack will retail for €399 (roughly $600 US.)
The game pack will contain the 40GB PS3, a copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and a Sixaxis controller. It will run the same price as the movie pack. Sony UK confirmed that the latter bundle would also be released in the UK, but that there were no plans to release the movie pack there.
The Wii is the only console not to fall prey to the multi-SKU fad. I wonder if that will change in future due to all this bundle madness, or if they will stick with the standalone console?

Over the weekend, we reported on a 2K Sports-Pontiac collaboration, the Pontiac Virtual NCAA Final Four Tournament. Here’s another step in our continued efforts to provide you, our loyal readers, with opportunities to prove your gaming prowess. This time around, though, the sport in question has a decidedly more worldwide flair, so you’re really going to have to be at the top of your game to compete.
Sony, EA Sports, and FIFA have teamed up to bring you the fourth annual FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC). This global gaming gauntlet takes place on the “football pitch” (see, I can do Britspeak) of EA Sports’ FIFA 08, as well as the Sony-owned cyberspace that is the PlayStation Network. This Saturday, March 1st, the sole North American live qualifier in this year’s FIWC will take place from 2 PM to 8 PM PST at the GameStop located at 1000 Universal Studios Blvd., Universal City, CA.
The day’s tournament bracket comprises 128 spots. 50 were made available through online pre-registration that began on Februrary 18th (it’s now closed), while the remaining 78 will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. In other words, if you feel like you have a shot at winning, you better also feel like waiting outside that GameStop for quite a while. Strangely enough, this tourney seems to be the “bizarro” version of the aforementioned College Hoops 2K8 contest, which is nationwide and restricted to Xbox Live users.
In an extra-special-super-happy-fun-time bonus, Jorge Flores and Anthony Hamilton of the MLS team Chivas USA will appear from 4:30 to 6 PM to “greet competitors and spectators”. So in addition to some lawn chairs and a picnic basket, you might want to bring some stuff-to-be-signed. For more information on the FIWC, head on over to its official Web site, and tell us: will any of you L.A.-area Dtoiders be signing up to kick some ass?

It’s no secret that around these parts, we love demos. In fact, we love them so much that when a game doesn’t have a demo, we start to get a little nervous. “What are they hiding?” we wonder aloud, much to the chagrin of our friends and family. So you can imagine our disappointment when we read today that we shouldn’t be expecting a demo for Rockstar’s upcoming crime epic, Grand Theft Auto IV.
OK, so that doesn’t necessarily have us worried about the quality (it is GTA after all), and their excuses for going sans demo do make sense. But will that stop us from being moderately grumpy for the next hour as a result? No. No it won’t.

EA hosted a special DICE event at GDC last week, showing off the various titles the Swedish developer has in the works. The first embargo to up and die covered the recently delayed Battlefield: Bad Company and, since we couldn’t spend as much time as we’d have liked with the title, we’ve gathered videos and previews from some other outlets for you to enjoy. We do have some pictures of the swank event, hosted at San Francisco’s Vessel Lounge, for you to peruse but let’s jump right into the game, shall we? %Gallery-17120% Read - Battlefield: Bad Company Multiplayer Hands-On (GameSpot) Read - Battlefield: Bad Company Preview (IGN)

Wii outsold PlayStation 3 nearly 4-to-1 in Japan during the four weeks ending on February 24, reports Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain. What else is new? Actually, it’s a ‘real’ game, for once, that appears to be driving the ongoing sales surge. Super Smash Bros. Brawl has managed to move 1.33 million units since its January 31 release, no doubt contributing to sales of 331,627 Wii consoles during the period tracked. In comparison, PS3 conjured up a mere 89,131 units sold.
Additionally, Nintendo managed to unload nearly as many Balance Boards as it did Wiis, with Wii Fit selling 309,311 units to become the (distant) second best-selling ‘game’ during the four-week period. As for Xbox 360…? Put it this way: Wii outsold the poor thing more than 23-to-1. Damn, yo.
