Ah, cross-promotion: only the true geniuses in the field of marketing can pull it off. Or something. I don’t know, I’ve never studied or worked in the industry. But I do know videogames, and I also know that having them at an event — especially when the game won’t be out at retail for another two months or so — is guaranteed to bring out some fans.
2K Sports did just this on Wednesday at the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. (I wonder if Niero and Colette went…) They brought out the Wii version of Top Spin 3 and showed it off for the first time in spectacular fashion. The video from the event includes tennis stars like Maria Sharapova, James Blake, Gaël Monfils, and Svetlana Kuznetsova duking it out with Wiimotes instead of real tennis rackets.
Strangely, the video features no gameplay footage from the Wii version (the footage that it does have looks way too good to have come from the Wii version, i.e., it was probably taken from the PS3 or 360 versions). I guess they’re not ready to bring it to the masses quite yet.
Still, the three-minute video incorporates some interviews with Francois Giuntini, the creative director at PAM Development (the developer of the game), as well as Anthony DeLuca, a producer from 2K. They discuss the feature set of the game (naturally, it includes “family-friendly” mini-games), and the improvements it makes over Top Spin 2. Check out the video after the jump, along with the press release and three photos from the premiere.
Top Spin 3 will be out for the PS3, 360, Wii, and DS on May 20th. Head on over to www.topspin3thegame.com for more information.

If, for some bizarre reason, you were looking forward to Prototype’s multiplayer features, then now is the time to retract pre-order plans and shake your fist in the air as if to futilely reprimand God for his sunken glory. The previously planned co-op component of Prototype has been scrapped, leaving it a game for loners only.
Radical’s Tim Bennison explained that the dev team felt they would not "be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we’re aiming for with the original single player story."
While some people will whine about this, I actually commend Radical’s decision. Rather than tack on a shoddy multiplayer option that probably wouldn’t get used enough to justify the work, the team has decided to focus purely on crafting a complete single player experience — I remember the days when we had more of those! Bennison said if the game sells, there’s no ruling out future DLC to add multiplayer, but I honestly don’t think there’d be much point.
I believe it was a good decision, and hopefully it leads to a polished, complete title, rather than two unfinished halves roughly stuck together with masking tape.

TNA and WWE may be two completely separate wrestling entities, but they both happened to reveal the first screens and information about their respective videogames yesterday. THQ told us about WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, and Midway did the same thing with the TNA game they’re developing, TNA iMPACT!.
Midway sent along a (really short) press release with two screenshots of the game; you can view them after the jump and below, respectively. There’s no word on whether they’re from the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version. Either way, the screens look good — and I dare say, better than SvR 2009. Eight more images, along with a trailer and the game’s official forums, are available at the newly launched Web site, www.tnagame.com.
I stopped watching wrestling when I was in high school for one reason or another, so I haven’t really been keeping up with the times. The last time I was really into wrestling, the WWE was still the WWF. Man, I miss the Rock ‘N’ Sock Connection… However, my colleague Gameboi is a big fan of wrestling, so he knows what he’s talking about when he says, “TNA is where the once great wrestlers go to die. Even I can’t watch it.” Hm. Perhaps the game will be better than the real thing, then…
You’ll be able to beat the crap out of your friends in TNA iMPACT! this summer on the PS3, 360, Wii, and PS2.

At least one anonymous Dtoid editor has been hounding the local game store to no avail, since finding out that the Metal Gear Solid 4 pre-order DVDs have been seen (and obviously purchased by the lucky ones) in the wild.
So far, all attempts to secure a copy for said editor has been met with sighs, laughter, and much rolling of eyes by those behind counter (or so I’m told), but "they" are still trying. For those that have suffered a mind wipe, Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2, as it is called, includes those beta access keys that many PS3 owners are clamoring for. Oh yeah… it also has a few trailers for the game, and some backstory of key characters – just in case you slept through the other games or got confused by the convoluted storylines and just snuck around cargo ships.
Those access keys will come in handy on April 17th, when you can start downloading the beta for Metal Gear Online. You might not want to hold your breath until gametime, as it doesn’t get the full green light until April 21st. Don’t worry though, as you will have until May 5th to take MGO through its paces. DO WANT, too?

There once was a time when exclusives played a big part in console sales, and while times have indeed changed, having the right games on your hardware can still make a difference. It’s public knowledge that Sony may have dragged their feet when it came time to wheeling and dealing with Rockstar, and they paid a pretty big price for that mistake — Grand Theft Auto IV is now multiplatform. But the past is the past, and it can no longer be undone. That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t downplay what the competition has to offer. According to SCEA’s VP of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, the episodic content offered to Xbox 360 owners is nothing to get worked up about:
"[Microsoft] spent the GNP of several small Latin American countries to get that [content], and if you’ve ever played San Andreas…there’s a lot of game to Grand Theft Auto and there’s going to be a lot of game to Grand Theft Auto IV to the point where I think most people will have that Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS3, day and date, same core game shipping on the 360. Perhaps they’ll be shipping some episodic content in the fall, but there is a whole lot of product shipping on the PS3 in April and I personally don’t think there’s going to be a huge percentage of folks who jump into downloadable content for another price when they’re still playing through the core product."
More on this, after the jump:

Those who harbored desires to go on Crackdown-esque romps through New York City with a genetically mutated pal will undoubtedly be crushed to learn that developer Radical Entertainment and publisher Sierra have decided to scrap Prototype’s multiplayer mode in order to encourage players to truly delve into the single-player storyline, and, more truthfully, so they could meet their original Fall 2008 launch window.
Radical’s Tim Bennison defended the decision in an interview with TeamXbox, hinting at a possibility of co-op functionality in post-release DLC, and confirming that “multiplayer will definitely be on the table from the start” when, should the game be well-received, it comes time for a sequel — which we can only guess will be titled Reference Design, followed by the critically acclaimed Initial Model, and then the action-packed conclusion, Finished Product.

We all heard the resounding groan that resulted when fans of 2005’s well received Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction learned that Radical Entertainment and Vivendi would not be creating the video game adaptation for the upcoming cinematic stab at the muscle-bound, chartreuse hothead. Well, after watching this debut trailer for The Incredible Hulk, we’ll see your groan, and raise you an extremely disappointed sigh.
Throwing Ultimate Destruction’s havoc-wreaking formula to the wind, the adaptation will apparently focus on our favorite lesser-known pastimes of the green meanie: moving very slowly, getting repeatedly knocked over, and being stomped on by robots. If this trailer is any indication of what we can expect from the final product, we think we’d rather spend $60 to have Lou Ferrigno pummel us for a few hours. It would be much less painful, and he could probably use the cash.
(We’re joking, of course. We love you, Lou. Please don’t hurt us.)

Though we were briefly distracted by mention of some other bands set to feature in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Activision has reminded us that the rhythmography will, in fact, include Aerosmith tunes. Gamespot reports that of the 40-plus songs in the game, 60 percent will be devoted to the increasingly decrepit crooners.
Ah, but age is just a number and fans aren’t likely to care when they start pressing plastic in rhythm to these confirmed numbers:
Expect further songs to be revealed at an excruciatingly slow pace as the game’s June release walks this way.
