Fans of Blue Dragon’s Mistwalker / Artoon dream team may have to hold back some bitter tears following the news that AQ Interactive will hold back the release of Cry On. According to 1UP, the action RPG, meant to be the third of Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Xbox efforts, has been canceled due to “the current market environment and forecasts for the future.” The company added, “We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release.”

Whether you consider it a cryin’ shame or like fans to cry in shame, you can anticipate Sakaguchi and Friends to unveil more titles in the future. Old habits die hard.

The ten most downloaded PSN games of 2008 screenshot

There were plenty of games to download on the PlayStation Network this year. I’m still kind of new to this downloading, though. Call me old-fashioned, but I like the box and manual. I did purchase Tekken 5, Super Puzzle Fighter, a few others, and plenty of PS1 games, so it’s all slowly growing on me.

Presenting Branching Dialogue, a weekly, wordy and often worryingly pedantic discussion of video game genres, trends and err … stuff I didn’t think to put in this introductory line.

If there’s one thing the year 2008 has proven adept at, it’s polarizing players with titles that seem to generate more discussion than actual sales. Much like Assassin’s Creed before it, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia has been viciously yanking people off fences, this time with simplified controls, Open-World Lite[TM] platforming and sassy, cel-shaded protagonists.

The game’s difficulty (or supposed lack thereof) has also come under scrutiny, with some tough-guy gamers lamenting the Prince’s newly found and quite convenient resistance to death. I don’t wish to argue with the complaint … but I do want to pluralize it. “This game is not difficult,” and, “You can’t die in this game,” are two very different accusations, and one of them is more than a little unobservant of modern conventions.

I hate to break it to you guys, but death has been pushing up daisies for years.

Michael Phelps game to have action, also swimming screenshot

A billion years ago (in World wide web time) we brought you the thrilling announcement that developer 505 Games are actively working with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps on new videogame “projects” slated to hit next-generation consoles and the iPhone in an undetermined timeframe. Specifics on the title(s) have been scarce at ideal. We couldn’t confirm that any of these projects featured swimming until recently when 505 president Adam Kline decided to talk Phelps with the The Daily News.

Kline, obviously excited about his new property, pitched it as a “pure action game,” that involves swimming. He left it up in the air as to what the action comment actually meant.

Swimming will be a part of it, but it won’t be set in an Olympic pool going back and forth. This is a pure action game.

He went on to say that 505 games believes the Phelps property to be the “next Tiger Woods project” and that it could “be here for the next 10 years.” He then confirmed that money would be spent marketing the title, which I find incredibly ridiculous. Marketing isn’t needed, Mr. Kline. Everyone wants a Michael Phelps game.

Wii video service hitting Japan in 2009 screenshot

Nintendo is set to debut a video service for the Wii in 2009. Of course — as of right now — it is only slated to hit Japan. According to a CVG report (via Reuters) the service will feature unannounced original content consisting of cartoons as well as other kinds of video “entertainment.”

The service is being constructed in coordination with Japanese ad company, Dentsu. Some of the content will be free.

This news is a bit of a surprise, mainly because this is the first thing Nintendo has done with the Wii that has any resemblance to what other consoles are providing this generation. The most notable example is Microsoft’s Netflix streaming which, according to experts, is only useful for catching up on past episodes of The Office.

Creating a good video distribution service on the Wii has to be hard (that’s what she said), but I would imagine that Nintendo has a firm grip on what its audience wants. I’m personally unaware of what Wii fans like to watch, but that’s probably the (only) reason I am not a Nintendo of Japan executive.

Rock Band 2 DLC almost ready for Wii ... Nick Chester made me do this story screenshot

When Rock Band 2 was announced for the Wii, Harmonix promised that downloadable songs would finally be available. It’s been a week, but where are they? They’re certainly not on any hard drives SD cards right now.

If you’re one of the twisted creatures who were looking forward to downloading songs for the Wii, don’t fret too hard. The DLC is in the “final testing stages,” as confirmed by Harmonix community manager Sean Baptiste. Twenty free bonus songs will be released, along with thirty other tracks, “as early in 2009 as possible.”

In addition, it has been promised that Wii owners will eventually get hundreds of songs with the release of the entire Rock Band back catalogue. So sit tight, guys; everything will be okay.

First details and screenshots of MLB 09 The Show make me salivate screenshot

Sports fans will likely remember that this year’s best baseball videogame, bar none, was SCEA San Diego’s MLB 08: The Show. The game happened to be the subject of my first article for Destructoid, and in my opinion — and that of most other gamers — it blew 2K Sports’ effort, MLB 2K8, out of the water.
