Looking at this examination of GameStop’s sales over at Gamasutra, it’s hard to not get frustrated thinking about how much money the used game monolith is making on our undying urge to play “the next massive thing.” Pulling figures from the 10-K filings made each year by the company with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Gamasutra noticed some interesting figures. Notably among those: “between 41 and 46 percent” of the company’s gross profits are coming from used game sales alone.

And how much is the company making, on the dollar, for each dollar they invest in the used game market? According to the analysis, GameStop is making 48 cents on each 100 spent in the used games trade — a nearly 50% profit margin on a service that accounts for “22 percent to 28 percent of GameStop’s revenue.”

Though GameStop’s plans for world domination weren’t explicitly spelled out in the 10-K, we anticipate to hear more about them in the coming months. Alright, alright — fine, you got us. GameStop isn’t planning global domination … yet.

Splinter Cell Conviction could hit retail this Christmas screenshot

Duke Nukem Forever Splinter Cell: Conviction has been delayed. A lot. But it’s possible that Ubisoft has finally cracked whatever problems they’ve been having with the eternally upcoming sequel. A blurb in their 2008-2009 fiscal report mentions that Conviction — among several other titles — could be headed to consoles as early as this Christmas.

“In 2008-09, we also continued to invest heavily in Ubisoft’s future potential, hiring some 1,300 talents for our studios with a view to driving the Company’s expansion, further strengthening our franchises and preparing for the next generation of handheld as well as home consoles.”

“The results of these [expansion] efforts will be seen as early as this Christmas with one of the industry’s most ambitious games line-ups which will include Assassin’s Creed 2, James Cameron’s Avatar, Splinter Cell Conviction, Rabbids Go Home and Red Steel 2.”

Watching Conviction slide off our radar was painful. We’re glad you’re back, Mr. Fisher, but you really need to knock off that whole emo thing you’re rocking right now. Put on some goggles, man.

set in the desert, WiiMotion Plus support screenshot

The original Wii sword and gun game is making a comeback for the holiday season of 2009 with Ubisoft’s announcement of Red Steel 2.

Set in a high-tech desert city, this Ubisoft Paris-devleoped game will use Nintendo’s new add-on, the WiiMotion Plus. This will be Ubisoft’s first title with support for the device. It is stated that even your swing strength will be sensed, with the “emphasis on swinging, shooting and fun.”

Red Steel was a one-of-a-kind opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing US at Ubisoft. “Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.”

In case you already haven’t heard, more Red Steel 2 details will be revealed in the June issue of Nintendo Power. For now, you can look at the only image they sent us this day in our gallery below. It’s a sword in the dirt. Great.

How do you think this will turn out? Is this something you’re looking forward to?

Check out screens and box art of The BIGS 2 screenshot

You guys and gals all love arcade sports games, right? Sure you do. 2K Sports knows that, which is why they’re putting out The BIGS 2, the sequel to 2007’s beloved baseball bash, on July 7th. That might seem a long way off, so for now, you’re going to have to satiate your desire to drill homers off the billboards of Times Square with the six screenshots of the game that 2K sent us yesterday. They feature some of baseball’s most prominent stars performing superhuman feats, and hey, isn’t that how we like to picture our sports idols anyway?

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter joins Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis in trying to take down the Green Monster; Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins leaps to grab a ball in St. Louis (note the Gateway Arch); Twins first baseman Justin Morneau tees off in Vegas; Mets shortstop Jos

New inFAMOUS trailer shows how you roll screenshot

Please, God, let there be someone else who finds that caption funny. I’d hate to be alone in this world.

Sony released a new trailer for inFAMOUS today and it’s pretty damn cool. This video is focused on how you’ll travel throughout Empire City, be it across the rooftops, on power lines or using the elevated train. It also shows a little bit of combat but it’s really only in service to the main goal of depicting the game’s environments. Check it out after the jump.

I had a opportunity to play inFAMOUS last week, and I’m pretty interested in the title based on what I’ve seen. I haven’t laid down money on a pre-order just yet, but I’m seriously considering it, because running across the environments is just super-fun.

Rather than waste your time with my incoherent ramblings, I’ll just advocate that you read Samit’s preview. And check out the gallery for some “electrifying” new screenshots. Har har har.

We put a lot of focus on iPhone games that are complete and rich enough to fit on handheld consoles like the PSP and DS. But this week, we thought we’d look at the sort of small, quickplay game that the platform already does superior than any other. Because this week, we’re addicted to Catcha Mouse.

Yeah, OK, stop snickering, it sounds kind of silly. And the game’s premise is goofy enough to match: As a mouse tries to escape through holes in your floor, you have to lay out traps to stop it.

Red Steel 2 will have cowboys and swords screenshot

If you have a Wii and a desire to play a game that features a sword-wielding cowboy, then Ubisoft has the game for you. It’s called Red Steel 2. And yeah, war has changed.

The June issue of Nintendo Power has the scoop on the game’s apparent overhaul. We haven’t seen the magazine yet, but Joystiq managed to pull two interesting details (and images) from it. The first is the obvious Wild West flair Ubisoft is shooting for.

The other scrap of information is the confirmation of MotionPlus support, which is something that The Conduit guys shied from when crafting their first-person shooter. Apparently, Ubisoft thinks MotionPlus makes the sword action much more realistic. Well, as realistic as cowboy sword fighting can get.
