When Criterion dropped the Burnout Paradise demo on Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network late last year, fans clamored for their first chance to try out the game’s open world. It wasn’t long before some were a bit disappointed, with whiners crawling out of the woodwork to complain about everything you could possibly think of. Criterion’s Alex Ward was outspoken, reminding everyone that it was “just a demo,” and that they felt this was the best Burnout game yet. As he put it, “Burnout has always and will always be about evolution. We’re quite open about this, and we’ve said it many times and in many interviews so it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone really.” Were the naysayers right, or did this “evolution” and willingness to make drastic changes pay off? And is “The Crash Mode” really the “suXXors”? Hit the jump for the better-late-than-never Destructoid review of Burnout Paradise.

Professional blogger Yehuda has compiled a great little trip through the land of video game to board game conversion. He begins with the early games like Berzerk, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong (pictured). Quick recap of a few of those game’s gameplay mechanics: In Berzerk you would flick the back of your guy and his arms would swing up knocking over the bad guy in the next tile; Pac-Man you pressed as hard as you could over marbles to make them pop into the protagonist, and in Donkey Kong there was actually a rubber band inside the arm to drop barrels — if you got through a full game without a malfunction you were very lucky. Yehuda takes us all the way from the strong beginnings in the ’80s to the modern seventh generation in gaming. Definitely a gasp-inducing bit of nostalgia for any kid whose parents thought buying the board game was a reasonable equivalent to the video game. Not that you’ve forgotten, but you’ll also be treated to the BioShock-themed art book “Breaking the Mold.” Sadly, you’ll no longer be required to send in your old Big Daddy as verification that he was, indeed, a DD suffer. We say sadly because we can’t shake the image of a broken-drilled Little Daddy staring out the window while your new one flies around the room with cries of “To infinity and beyond!” Let’s try to remember who was in your hearts first and make him feel included, OK? [Via] Related: Popularity: 4% [?] There’s already been much buzz about Echochrome, PS3’s upcoming offering that looks like an accidental slip into MC Escher’s famous Relativity painting. The new word on the street is that the title will include a level editor so players can craft their own impossible levels and then force friends to try to solve them until they weep with frustration. Sounds like a blast for the gaming sadists out there. The title is confirmed for PS3 and PSP release in Japan, but so far all America’s got confirmation on is a PSN downloadable version of the game. I’m hoping we get a PSP version in the long run as it seems like a great title to take on long flights (and my life is full of those lately.) Echochrome is tenatively set for a Spring 2008 release. [Via ThreeSpeech - Thanks Justin!] Related: Popularity: 3% [?] Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm The last time we delved into the great mysteries of Rock Band, no other stand-alone accessories had been announced for the game. Now, Harmonix has confirmed that the music game will come in only bundles until 2008, with no individual guitars this year. We’ll wait for the implication to sink in. Yep, that means that if you want the full guitar/vocal/drum/bass experience in 2007, you’re going to have to buy a Guitar Hero controller. That seems kind of silly to us, but, hey, we’re not the one’s losing money. Also, Harmonix says that the game will ship with between 40 and 50 songs. That, however, doesn’t include unlockable tracks, so the final song count (like so many things Rock Band) is anybody’s guess. That is, until Meizu’s OS X duplication team becomes available. Pages 3 and 4 after the break. [Thanks, Anonymouse] Continue reading Keepin’ it real fake, part LXXXII: The Chintendo Vii

We’re fairly certain we’ve held laptop before that are lighter than the Dell M1730’s LCD alone. That said, it can certainly pump out the graphics, and the amBX-esque lighting functions are kind of growing on us. An extra perk to the AGEIA PhysX systems is an exclusive Unreal Tournament 3 level with extra explosion fodder, which is possibly one of the best selling points we’ve heard for the physics card. %Gallery-7869%
