Although Rock Band was available for pre-order from a number of e-tailers earlier this summer, we’re now hearing the “official word” from the suits at MTV regarding pricing. According to the MTV Multiplayer blog, both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions “will launch on November 23rd at a cost of $169.99.” Bundled in will be the game, a single guitar, a mic and a drum kit. Additionally, the PlayStation 2 version — which seemed to be on track for a 2008 release — will reportedly make it onto store shelves just before the last ditch holiday rush, as it is now scheduled to land on December 10th for $159.99. As expected, the PS2 / PS3 packages will include wireless guitars, and while an optional cordless axe will certainly be available for the Xbox 360, its bundle will (sadly) include one with a tether. Oh, and Amazon has already updated its pages to reflect the finalized figures.

Well if there are still any doubts as to who’s winning the portable console war, let them be dispelled here and now: in the less than three years since it’s been on the market, the Nintendo DS (in both its Lite and Phat flavors) has sold a total of 50 million units, according to the unofficial VG Chartz. Sony’s PSP (released less than one month later in Japan)? Less than half that number. While the PSP will surely get a sales boost now that it too has slimmed down, DS still seems to be the clear choice of the majority of gamers. Next challenge for Mario and friends: hitting 100 million faster than the iPod.

See that Wii or Xbox sitting under your TV? The PSP or DS tucked away in your messenger bag? That copy of Pac-man on your cellphone which cost five bucks and expires next month? Each of them owe a debt of gratitude to the granddaddy of all videogame consoles, the Atari 2600, which ushered in an era of unprecedented television usage, and which turns 30 years old this month. That’s right, the first 2600 units rolled off the assembly line in October of 1977, delighting both children and kids at heart with games like Pitfall and Pole Position, and helping distract the nation after the untimely death of the King, the tragic crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane, and Pele’s retirement. So here’s to you, dear 2600: Atari may only be a shadow of its former self today, but you’ve lived on in our fond memories, in retro Flashback products, and last but not least, in tricked-out mods from the great Ben Heckendorn.

Well folks, it looks like the funky, PS3 price-drop happenings you’ve been hearing about lately may very well be dropping all over the place. Apparently, hot on the heels of a new filing with the FCC, and various rumors concerning an approaching $399 console, Sony (which has heretofore denied the chatter) has announced a “Big Bang” press conference to take place on October 12th, where many believe they will intro a new, lower priced 40GB console. With nothing big slated for the holiday season yet, and Xbox 360 price-cuts and bundles being bandied about, it makes sense that Sony would come out swinging before holiday shoppers hit the stores. It’s truly a good time to be a buyer.

Nothing says “hello big boy” like a transparent silicone sleeve for your gear. Especially when it’s free. Nintendo knows this, and is offering a sticky wrap for your Wii Remote. Just call Nintendo at 1-866-431-8367 or hit the read link to order yours on-line. Combine it with their chunky replacement strap and you’ll have class action lawyers screaming their “safeword” in no time.

Thanks to a helpful tipster, we have a couple of Best Buy documents showing a $399 Playstation 3 with 40GB disk and Spiderman 3 (yes, Blu-ray) bundle with an “In Stock Date” of October 28. However, the more important “Street Date” field is unfortunately empty at the moment. While the docs look legit and don’t seem to be Photoshopped, they can still be faked easily enough. So we did a quick lookup on the UPC code and sure enough, while the details are masked, the manufacturer is listed as “Sony Computer Entertainment of America.” Unfortunately, we don’t see the new model CECHG01 listed anywhere in the docs. As such, let’s be clear: this ain’t official. Still, we’ll be paying close attention on October 12th as will you we suspect.

Shortly after hearing that Sony’s PSP overtook Nintendo’s DS in Japanese sales, along comes word that — surprise, surprise — the Big N is still king in the Wii / PS3 / Xbox 360 sales war. According to reports that looked at movement from April through September, the Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 “by more than four to one in Japan,” which is admittedly better than the “six to one” differential it’s faced before. Reportedly, Nintendo moved nearly 1.6 million units in the homeland while Sony garnered just over 385,000 new PS3 customers in the same period, but this really shouldn’t be shocking to anyone at this point.

While there’s certainly no shortage of tennis racket-esque accessories available to make your Wii Tennis experience a tad more realistic, those looking for even more authenticity can will soon be able to turn to a familiar name for their fix, as racker-maker Prince has now announced that it’s making the jump into the Wiicessory business. According to IGN, Prince has teamed up with Qualtech Global to produce the rackets, which will be available in your choice of three colors and will apparently be exclusive to Circuit City (at least for the time being), where they’ll set you back $15 apiece. You’ll have to make do with your imagination for a little while longer though, as the rackets won’t be available until November 15th.

Just in case you’ve somehow managed to control everything else in your world with Wiimotes, why not your lovely N95? Thanks to a team at the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg, Austria, users with an S60 handset can now control games with Nintendo’s fun-lovin’ controller. WiiConnect, which is a Bluetooth driver for S60 phones, “enables you to play party games directly on / through your mobile phone,” all while taking advantage of the accelerometer and rumble functionality. As an added bonus, the team also crafted WiiRider, a motorcycle simulation that utilizes the Wiimote’s features. We know, you’re already eager to know how much this time waster is gonna cost ya, but we’ve got excellent news: it’s being provided as freeware in the read link below.

Although we knew that Japan would be getting a new pair of pastel-ed Xbox 360 controllers, there’s good news for those camped out in America, too. Starting today, US consumers can snatch up each of the colored controllers for $49.99 apiece, which are indeed of the wireless variety. Thankfully, this blue looks a tad more masculine than the prior version we saw, and if you’re still in doubt, check out a few more angles after the jump.
