Rock Revolution dropping in early 2009, scissor kick bonuses confirmed. screenshot

From the makers of Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Freaks, and Metal Gear Solid IV comes the transcending rhythm experience of Rock Revolution. For the first time ever in a music-based game, players will have access to over two instruments to choose from. Drums, guitar, and possibly even a microphone will be offered when the game hits store shelves next year.

Konami stated to CVG that Rock Revolution will be “the most advanced music title for any format,” and have “the most authentic drum kit imaginable.” If authentic drums weren’t enough, over forty songs will be available. There is also a new “freeform” mode that allows the industrious to create their own songs and then play them. The Wii version will allow users to utilize their Wii Remote and Nunchuck like they were playing some imaginary game like Wii Music or something. Also, scissor kick bonuses utilizing the motion sensing devices of the Wii have been confirmed.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re not ready for the Rock Revolution. In all seriousness, Revolution does have a few things going for it. The drum kit may not be as cool as the crazy Rock Band 2 optional kit, but it certainly looks a bit more challenging than what Rock Band offers by default. Plus, there’s definitely a possibility to get more Eurocentric music, and I love the Spice Girls.

Rag Doll Kung Fu, PAIN: Amusement Park and PixelJunk Eden screenshot

Like I did in my last post, I’ll once again be dishing out the details on a few more PlayStation Network titles that were shown during E3 08.

Let’s start it off with Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic. Developed by Tarsier Studios, it is, in fact, based upon the original RDKF. You and three other ragdolls will be able to beat the crap out of each other online and off, in addition to unlocking trophies and assets for further character customization.

Did you enjoy PAIN? Well I hope you aren’t reading this while balancing boiling water over your head, because an expansion pack is coming out soon and I wouldn’t want you to inadvertently burn yourself from all the excitement.

PAIN: Amusement Park ($5.99) contains a couple of new modes: “HOT n COLD” (find the hidden teddy bear through clues), “Clown Toss” (a remix of “Mime Toss”), “Fun with Explosives” (4-player: detonate as many explosives as possible), “Trauma” (multiplayer: cause yourself the most pain), and “Call the Shot” (multiplayer: choose objects to hit in a single launch).

Lastly, there’s PixelJunk Eden, which you’ve probably heard about before. Basically, you play as this little creature that swings from plant to plant while destroying enemies and collecting things before the timer runs out. It’s worth noting that rumble, PSP Remote Play, and trophies are all supported, as well as co-op for you and two others.

Do any of these games sound appealing to you?

With giant monsters like these, it’s understandable why Sony forgot to mention Killzone 2 in their keynote!

At the Sony keynote earlier today, a new level from Resistance 2 was shown off. On this level, you encounter the Leviathan, a gigantic monster that’s too stupid to just knock over the building you’re hiding in. At the beginning of the fight, the Leviathan will grab you and throw you to a nearby building. From there, you will make your way across a make shift bridge that’s strong enough to take two hits from the beast. Eventually the Leviathan grabs you again and throws you a few blocks to another building. At this point, you have to lure the Leviathan towards a building filled with explosives to take out the creature.

MAG

The trailer for a new, modern combat shooter, Massive Action Game, debuted at Sony’s event today. There’s a lot of guys running around, blowing stuff up and shooting one another. Apart from that, we get the title, a flowchart that shows a chain of command and a maximum player count broken down into squads of eight.

It really isn’t a lot to go on. The chain of command first made me think this was some sort of tactical affair, where higher-ranked players would plan out strategies to be executed by ground-pounding players in the squads. If that’s the case, this might be the most ambitious online wargame ever attempted.

Fat Princess and Crash Commando screenshot

With our coverage of the biggest and brightest PlayStation 3 games, you probably thought we all forgot about the exciting new PlayStation Network titles that were shown at Sony’s E3 08 press conference. Well sir, we did not.

First up is Fat Princess, DarkStar Industries’ team-based arcade game. It’s your task to rescue the princess from the enemy dungeon. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong! Your foes have overfed the princess in an attempt to make your mission that much harder.

In fact, Fat Princess’s multiplayer is for 32-players (two teams of 16, head-to-head), as you’ll need all the help you can get to carry your overweight princess back to safety.

Other interesting tidbits include: 5 character classes (worker, warrior, archer, mage, priest), 10 unique maps, the ability to gather resources to upgrade your weapons and castle, 3 game modes (Rescue the Princess, Thwart the Invasion, Medieval Games) and finally, customizable avatars.

Hit the jump for Crash Commando, a game who’s title I keep mistakingly reading as “Captain Commando.”

LBP

Let the onslaught of new images continue! Sony has delivered more stills of the DIY platformer game, LittleBigPlanet. Not only are we treated to a few, adorable sackcloth characters, we get a small glimpse into the level design system.

Now, this is the sort of game that I’d have to wait at least six months to pick up, since I don’t particularly want to work to have my fun. After a look at the screens that depict a level in the process of being built, I’m really excited. Not to do any of it, mind you, but to see what all the lunatics come up with when given a toolset and a long leash. Plus, a few of those sackcloths look like Muppets, which is immediate win.

Are you guys pumped for this? Is it the level creation or the ability to play limitless levels produced by people all over the world that appeals more? Check out the screens in our gallery and let us know what you think.

[ Video not streaming? Upgrade your Flash version ] - more Destructoid videos

When Namco Bandai’s RPG Eternal Sonata came out last year I didn’t pick it up. The concept about the story taking place in dying composer Frederic Chopin’s fever induced dreams sounded really cool, sure, but I had plenty of other RPGs to play through at the time. That, along with some of the mixed reactions I was hearing about it prompted me to wait a while until the price dropped.

Then, news about a PlayStation 3 port with additional features started popping up, so I figured that would be the thing to wait for. Although it was originally rumored to be coming out at the beginning of this year, Namco Bandai got quiet on the subject of a release date and we haven’t heard much on the subject in a while. Finally, though, there is a (rather vague, actually) release date to look forward to: the good ole standby of “fall.” The following are the extras we can expect to see in the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata.

  • New quests, battles and events.
  • New characters: Crescendo and Serenade can now join your party. You can also change the characters’ default outfits.
  • New music: Expanded Chopin soundtrack?
  • Multiple endings apparently depending on which characters you pick.
  • There’s also some mention of 2-3 player co-op in battles. Since I never played the original I’m not sure if this is actually new or not, but I don’t remember hearing anything about it.

Sounds good to me. Adding more content is certainly a good way to entice late adopters. Check out the gallery for some screens and hit the jump to check out another trailer.

Question: Where was Killzone 2 during Sony’s Press Conference today? They showed footage of the game during the video montage of Sony games, but they really didn’t mention the game at all. You’d think they would want to hype up another one of their first party titles. Whatever, Sony. If you don’t want to hype up one of your own damn games, I guess I’ll do it for you.

Underworld coming out this November [Update] screenshot

After nothing but just screenshots, we finally have the first video footage of Tomb Raider: Underworld. The video starts off with Lara swimming underwater fighting against some sharks. She then makes her way to an ancient doorway/puzzle that she needs to figure out to continue on with the level. Lara eventually makes her way to a cave where she starts climbing her way up all while avoiding a giant squid.
