Activision to ship a ton of SKUs in 2009, including 3-4 new and 'exciting' IPs screenshot

During a September Quarter financial results call this afternoon, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick revealed that the company would be shipping more than 70s SKUs in 2009, all based on “already proven franchises.”

Translation: many versions of Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and Tony Hawk-based titles to appear on any piece of hardware that’ll play games. Confirmed on the call for 2009 were multiple Guitar Hero titles, a new Bond game, “innovative” Call of Duty titles, and games based on films like Dreamworks’ Monsters vs Aliens and Wolverine.

Kotick also notes that the company has plans to release games based on three to four new IPs, all of which he states are well into production. Later in the call, Activision’s Mike Griffith mentions Singularity, Prototype, and a Bizarre Creations racing title among these new IPs. It’s possible that the fourth of these new IPs may be the rumored DJ Hero supposedly in development by Activision Blizzard’s recent acquisition, Freestyle Games.

If you’re looking to crunch numbers, you can check out the press release for the September Quarter results here.

Upcoming PS3 firmware fixes text entry issues, owners sigh in relief screenshot

The latest PlayStation 3 firmware update will fix two critical issues that have been plaguing PS3 gamers for the last decade. Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel posted an update on PlayStation Blog stating that firmware version 2.52 will fix text entry issues with “some PS3 format software” and enhance the playback quality of other software.

This update comes at a pivotal time for PS3 owners, who have had to put up with subpar text messaging in Resistance 2. As we all know, the Chimera can’t speak English, but it’s important to realize that they do enjoy brief, concise, and humorous messages. Furthermore, the Chimera are overly fond of acronyms spawned by prolonged Internet usage. We’ve yet to sit a member of the alien horde down for response on the update because it keeps killing our staff members.

It’s good to know that Sony is staying on top of these things — even if it’s as easy as text entry or playback functionality. Were any of you experiencing these problems?

Who is up for another incredibly stylish Mirror’s Edge trailer? Well it doesn’t matter what your thought is, because we’ve one for you anyway.

In this new video promoting DICE’s interesting first-person-not-shooter, we get to learn a little bit more about the Runners. In case you don’t know (for some reason), these are the fleet-footed delivery boys and girls of whom main character Faith is one.

As with everything involving Mirror’s Edge, this video is incredibly cool. Will coolness translate into a good game? We’ll have our Destructoid review soon, so make sure to check it out.

Resistance 2 launch event at the San Francisco Metreon tonight screenshot

How’s this for a late notice? The San Francisco PlayStation store in the Metreon center will be selling Resistance 2 tonight at Midnight. People that pick it up at the Metreon tonight can expect a bunch of bonuses for waiting out in the cold rainy weather of the hobo infested streets of San Francisco.

Ted Prince and members of the Insomniac team will be on hand to chat it up with fans and sign duplicates of the game. Fans can also get their picture taken and have it slapped on the cover of Resistance 2. Best of all, there will be swag!

If anyone in the San Francisco area is going let us know. We want to see photos of the event! And yes, this Chimera Uncle Sam mashup is completely awesome.

Mirror's Edge screenshot

I have not spoken much about DICE’s Mirror’s Edge, mainly because I have been quietly skeptical about the whole thing. It’s not that I assumed it would suck, it’s just that everybody had gotten so instantly excited after a mere thirty seconds of concept footage, and I didn’t want to fall for the hype.

I decided instead to withhold all view until I finally got to take Faith for a spin around the rooftops myself, so it’s quite fortunate that publisher Electronic Arts decided to release a demo on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. How nice.

We’ve all had plenty of time to soak in the blue sky and feel the wind beneath our feet, so what do we all make of it? For at least one set of Jimpressions, feel free to hit the jump.

Sony patents an ultrasonic controller shaped like a boomerang screenshot

In June, Sony patented something truly special. The patent is for a new controller that will utilize “hybrid video capture and ultrasonic tracking, but will still have some of that old silly stuff like buttons and analog sticks. It also breaks apart and can be used as a smashing weapon, or more likely, a Wii remote.

Yet, unlike a Wii remote, this thing looks to be more of a three-dimensional sensing apparatus. The abstract (via Edge) states that the controller will examine “sound communications” to gauge the distance between each the player and the PS3. In addition to that, it will also be able to gauge the distance between players and then somehow spit that into the gaming experience.

So, what will players be able to do with a videogame controller that has the sensitivity of a bat and has the perfect grip and length to tenderize meat or pulverize humans? I haven’t the slightest idea, but this thing needs to happen immediately.

Snake and Sephiroth Sackboys (over)priced screenshot

Sony just announced over at the PlayStation.Blog that the first of their “premium” LittleBigPlanet Sackboys, based on Old Snake (from Metal Gear Solid 4) and Sephiroth (from Final Fantasy VII), will cost a whopping $1.99 each. These are just the first of the “premium” Sackboys to become available, with other designs “from our PlayStation family and even some outside the family” to come.

Now it would be one thing if these acks did something that other sacks couldn’t do, like stab, or shoot, or realistically shrivel up in cold water, but instead all they have going for them is their resemblance to other videogame characters. As a fan of the Wii’s Check Mii Out channel, I’m accustomed to downloading my videogame icon look-a-likes for free. Two bucks is hardly highway robbery, but it just feels bad to be charged for something my instincts tell me should cost nothing.
