In an effort to create more realistic fake instruments, Logitech is partnering with Activision on a line of “premium” peripherals for the latter’s upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour. Multiple products are in development, although Logitech would not comment on exactly what they’re, confirming only that the first of them will hit this year. Given that it already has the market cornered on USB microphones (nearly every music game’s mic is made by Logitech) we’re guessing all educated-like that guitars and drums are the core of the lineup. Also, while this news is obviously geared toward hyping World Tour, we’re looking into potential Rock Band compatibility for the products.
The peripherals are being designed to work with each platform Guitar Hero World Tour is launching on, specifically PS3, 360, Wii, and PS2. Logitech gaming devices VP Bruce Lancaster likens this move to the one the company made with steering wheels for Gran Turismo, saying, “A few years ago, Logitech refined the consumer steering wheel market with high-end controllers that enhance racing games. Now we’re looking forward to elevating the market for premium music-based video game controllers in a similar fashion.” Here’s hoping that one of the “premium” drumkit features is a steel kick pedal like the one used by our home band, the Blueberry Muffintops. What would you like to see?

While investigating the digital fate of Sierra’s Bourne franchise - which, after being passed over by Bond-owning Activision Blizzard, returned to Ludlum Entertainment - Variety’s Ben Fritz uncovered details on “Treadstone,” the sequel to High Moon Entertainment’s current console debut, already under development at fellow Sierra developers Radical Entertainment.
“What is Treadstone?” you ask, in your best Matt Damon impersonation. According to Variety “it’s a multi-player online game set in the world of the spy agency that trained Bourne.” We’ll assume that contraction is short for “it was” because, whad’ya know, “production has stopped” on the project. Perhaps once Ludlum Entertainment finds a new publisher for Bourne, whatever work Radical has already invested in “Treadstone” will find a new home, but that sounds unlikely to us. Instead, Treadstone will exist in that one place where They can never take it away from us: our imaginations.

The Behemoth’s Emil Ayoubkhan wanted to make it crystal clear that Castle Crashers will not be 1800 MS points ($22.50 US Earth dollars) when it releases Aug. 27, as indicated by the Japanese Xbox site. Ayoubkhan says that a price has not been decided on by Microsoft and that The Behemoth is working with the company to determine a “reasonable” price point, implying that the 1800 MS price point wouldn’t be The Behemoth’s choice.
As we said previously, $22.50 would make Castle Crashers the most pricey XBLA title ever — beating Penny Arcade’s record-setting $20 price tag. We’ll allegedly get final word on Castle Crashers’ price by, at the latest, Aug. 25.

During its quarterly earnings conference call, EA announced that its first-person romp through the popular Command & Conquer universe wouldn’t be released until the company’s fiscal year 2010. Converting that information into a format your calendar will superior understand: Don’t expect Tiberium to arrive before April 2009. We anticipate this delay from the game’s previous Fall 2008 release date will superior allow the designers to craft exciting weapons, insert formidable enemies and carefully remove any elements which could remind us of the last time someone tried to make a C&C FPS.

Yesterday’s news that Activision Blizzard was only holding onto a select few Vivendi/Sierra properties going forward didn’t look good for those awaiting the seemingly triumphant return of Ghostbusters. We contacted Sierra about the game’s absence from Blizzavision’s “to keep” list, and whether stated omission spelled doom for the Ecto-1 crew. Good news, everyone: the game’s not giving up the ghost.
A spokesperson for Sierra confirmed that, “First and foremost, the game is totally not canceled.” But does it have a publisher? “[Sierra] is reviewing its options regarding those titles that it won’t be publishing,” we were told.
While not explicitly stated, it definitely sounds like Sierra has begun the process of shopping its remaining titles around to other publishers. These include Double Fine’s hotly anticipated heavy metal adventure Br

The paved, petulant path past purgatory has been politely pushed to September. Speaking to Shacknews, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway will miss its August 26 release date.
A precise date is as-of-yet undecided, but Pitchford noted that “late September is the anniversary of Operation Market Garden, so I think it would be really poetic if the game launched on the anniversary.” Market Garden serves as a basis for Hell’s Highway and occured September 17 to 25, 1944. Online retailers Gamestop and Amazon are listing the game’s release for September 23.

Really, anyone old enough to remember Square’s 1997 PlayStation debut with Final Fantasy VII - a franchise that had only existed on Nintendo platforms - shouldn’t have been that shocked to see Square president Yoichi Wada sneak back onto the stage during Microsoft’s E3 press conference to announce “one more thing”: Final Fantasy XIII would be multi-platform.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Wada stated, “We always think about the territory and hardware for titles, and I just want to make sure that we’re neutral about dealing with companies.” Though he conceded that “in Japan … the Xbox 360 isn’t really that strong yet” he acknowledged that in “North America Microsoft is doing very well with its hardware.” Sounds about right to us.
Throw in escalating development costs, and you’ve got a no-brainer. Wada sums it up: “We’re now in the age of the multi-platform … in order to offer our product to the vast majority of gamers we need to deal with multiple companies and platforms.” Multiplatform third-party games are increasingly the norm; however, with certain “now-gen” Square Enix titles remaining selectively exclusive (think Infinite Undiscovery), we’re not quite ready to call it for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

With excitement still brewing for the upcoming GlaDOS-free follow up to Portal, developer Valve has come forward, throwing its considerable weight behind Xbox Live Arcade while adding that the company is ‘considering’ bringing other titles from its catalog to the service as well. Says Valve’s Doug Lombardi, “We’ll certainly consider it. If you look at what we’ve done on Steam, we try to make all our games available and we’re always reviewing the prices to keep them current. We’d love to do that, but Portal: Still Alive is our first step at doing that beyond the PC.”
While Lombardi adds that the studio currently has no “immediate plans” to test the waters of either the Wii or PlayStation 3, this remains great news for owners of Microsoft’s console, possibly giving those who missed Valve’s boat the first time around a second chance to climb on board.

We’d like to share the game comparison video one person dared to create. One person who goes by the nom de keyboard of “WiiSixty” on GameTrailers, which is fitting since they’ve created a short subject film pitting Resident Evil 4 for Wii against Resident Evil 5 for 360.
The video runs on a bit, but it nevertheless does a solid job of comparing everything from weapon reload animations to door opening animations (helpfully shown above) to the way enemies react when shot. We’ll give you one guess which game’s prettier overall, but we think the gameplay similarities between the two might surprise you. Well, maybe they won’t, since we’ve already talked about just how much won’t be changing from RE4 to RE5.
(Note: Looks like the embeddable video has caught a bad case of the T-virus; you’ll have to hit up GameTrailers to watch it.)
