Well, dear readers, we’ve got good news and we’ve got bad news … and then we’ve got good news again. The (first) good news — the promised Guitar Hero: World Tour drum tuning application is now available for download on Red Octane’s customer support site. The bad news is that the application requires you to connect your drum kit to your personal using a midi-USB cable, which we imagine few of you actually possess. The (second) good news — Red Octane is shipping these cables, free of charge, to anyone who requests one on their support site.
We suppose it’s bad news that we’ll be waiting for these cables to ship before we can give our drum kits some much-needed sensitivity training — on the other hand, the fact that we won’t be dealing with any suggestive, RealDoll-sized replacement boxes (or the resulting judgment from nosy neighbors) is good news indeed.
[Thanks, Eric G.]

Electronic Arts has dismissed rumors that the staff of Steven Spielberg’s next-gen project, codenamed LMNO, has been let go. In a statement (via EuroGamer), the publisher stated reports of the firing are “categorically not true.”
Following news that EA is slicing back on 6% of its workforce, VG247 reported that it was told by an anonymous EA employee that the dev team behind LMNO had been let go. “Almost everyone on the team has gone,” according to the source. The last we heard about the project, coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Personal computer, was that it “focuses on a touching and ever-changing relationship between you and a mysterious female character who holds the key to many futures.” His other secret project, PQRS, turned out to be Boom Blox for the Wii.

If you’re anything like us (and we assume you’re, otherwise what are you doing here?) you sort of forgot Lord of the Rings: Conquest existed. And who could blame you? With all the Fables about DeadFalloutCry, who had time for a Star Wars Battlefront-esque take on a license that’s sooo 2003? Well, hopefully you will on January 13, when the game arrives in North America on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
The release date notice emphasized how Conquest grants you to join either the forces of good or evil. As Pandemic boss Josh Resnick said, “What The Lord of the Rings fan hasn’t fantasized about joining Sauron’s army to slay Hobbits?” For the record, we haven’t, you sicko.

Continuing its long climb back to Phil Harrison-lead relevance, Atari has picked up an Acti/Blizzard merger cast off and might have made a home for another, according to Variety. The company will publish Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, adding not only multiplayer but a new campaign to the original Xbox release. “Originally it was just a remake, but we started thinking more and felt that wasn’t super compelling,” said Bill Kispert, head of interactive for Universal. Yeah, Bill. No kidding.
Variety also reports that Atari has picked up long-term licensing rights to Riddick to grant the possibility of more sequels. The trade pub says it comprehends that a similar deal could be in place for Ghostbusters, as was previously hinted by Dan Akroyd, though that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Well, finally, it seems all the Acti/Blizzard orphans have found good homes. … Wait a minute, who’s that sad, long-haired boy in the corner?

Now that “Oblivion with guns” is done, it’s time for Bethesda to make another “Fallout with swords.” The developer’s publishing executive, Paul Oughton, indicated to GI.biz that the company could “potentially” have the next Elder Scrolls title ready in 2010.
Oughton also stated Bethesda currently doesn’t have any plans to release its titles on Wii. He acknowledges that Nintendo has opened up a market, but the publisher plans to stick with the PS3, Xbox 360 and Computer. An Oblivion or Fallout 3 port for Wii is still theoretically possible, it just doesn’t sound like Bethesda would be the one doing it.

In addition to announcing new track packs, Neversoft has issued a trio of updates concerning the Guitar Hero World Tour drumset. First off, those who have been experiencing sensitivity issues with the set will be happy to know that the developer will be releasing a drum controller tuning kit for Windows “very soon,” so users can self-tune their skins at home. Neversoft also recommends that if you’re currently having issues, you should contact Activision customer support.
For Xbox 360 owners, the ION Drum Rocker compatibility patch should now be available for download. As for PlayStation 3 owners still waiting on the promised GHWT drum compatibility with Rock Band 2, Neversoft stated it’s all up to Harmonix to release an update for the game. We’ll poke them again to see if we have the ability to get an ETA on that patch.

Although Microsoft dodged this exact question every single time we asked it (and oh, we asked multiple times) - and temporarily dropped other, already confirmed features like movie sharing - the New Xbox Experience’s Netflix app will indeed stream HD content, if your connection can handle it. Interesting thing is, this is exclusive to the Xbox 360 for now: the various Netflix-enabled devices don’t; Netflix’s own “Watch Instantly” portal doesn’t!
Engadget took an episode of Heroes in HD for a spin and reported that “the quality was stunning.” There’s only about 300 titles (and some of those are Heroes episodes, so you’ll probably want to subtract those) but make no mistake: HD streaming is one of the strongest reasons yet to become a Netflix subscriber if you aren’t already.

No, it’s not just your imagination, Guitar Hero fans: Activision has now admitted that (as several fans reported over the weekend) there’s a problem with some of the World Tour drum kits. “We have learned that certain drum kit controllers manufactured for Guitar Hero World Tour have sensitivity issues,” the company stated in a written statement. “We believe that these controllers are limited to ones in the earlier manufacturing stages.”
Though Activision plans on releasing a drum tuning kit to help with the issue, those affected should be able to get some more immediate help by calling customer support at 310-255-2050 or hitting them up on the internet. Oh, and Activision? There will be a special place in corporate hell for you if you charge for this “tuning kit.” Just saying.

Given the volume of f-bombs and uninformed hate speech overheard during, oh, every game played over Xbox Live ever, we have to question if some of the service’s subscribers aren’t actually 5th graders. Anyway.
You can prove yourself better - and smarter - than them on Wednesday, when THQ and Blitz Arcade launch Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader: Make the Grade on XBLA. The quiz game will be priced at 1200 ($15). Failing to prove you’re smarter than a 5th grader will cost you your pride.
This week’s Arcade update also includes a new multiplayer map for Marble Blast Ultra (including its own Achievement) for the low, low price of nothing. (It’s free!)

There’s been a number of pleasant surprises that have come out of Treyarch’s upcoming installment in the wildly lucrative Call of Duty franchise — such as the inclusion of Jack Bauer, and its uncanny resemblance to the previous, well-received chapter in the series. However, last night’s episode of GameTrailers Television brought another shocking (yet welcome) revelation, straight from the mouth of Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia — Call of Duty: World at War will contain a four-player, co-op zombie (of the Nazi variety) survival mode.
Those who currently aren’t busy scraping pieces of their blown mind off of the wall behind them will probably be interested in a few details Lamia mentioned — the gameplay mode (which is unlocked upon the completion of the single player campaign) will place four players in a central structure, then assail them with wave upon wave of undead national socialists. Throughout the game, players will collect money which can be used to fortify their compound, or purchase new weapons. Also, there will be Nazi zombies.
Stoked celebrations can catch a glimpse of the SS Zombocalypse in Chapter Four of last night’s GTTV episode, now available online.
